Normally I’m not one to support on-line petitions so I’ll tell you about the last two government’ stances on internet censorship.

The previous government(the Howard Government) believed that censoring the internet was inefficient, unnecessary and that people should be able to choose what web sites they want to visit and the police are doing a fine job at catching on-line criminals and sex offenders. To satisfy families they provided free copies of internet filtration software to anyone who applied allowing families to feel safer for their children and people who are interested in more mature content can enjoy their freedom.

The current government(the Rudd government) abandoned the filter program and plan to replace it with a mandatory filter, not unlike China. Whilst I hate sites that cater to sick and perverted people I believe the police remain the answer to that and am appalled by the allegation made by members of this government that anyone who opposes internet censorship supports child pornography, rape and other acts of sexual violence in the past.

At this time there are just over 100,000 signatures and we could always do with more.
